Franklin Delano Roosevelt, president of the United States, speaker, bold, serious
The speaker is credible, I think Roosevelt was trying to sell an idea, not a product, because he was telling the Members of the Senate, The House of Representatives, and the Congress what to do with the Japanese attacking.
The Japanese bombing in Pearl Harbor and other places near the Pacific, December 7 and 8, 1941.
It doesn’t seem like brainwashing. Roosevelt was just telling the Congress to declare war and providing reasons for that.
Vice president, speaker, the members of the Senate and the House of Representatives because he said, “Mr. Vice President, Mr. Speaker, Members of the Senate, and of the House of Representatives…” I think the “target market” is the entire nation because Roosevelt spoke his speech for the whole nation. No, the speech does not affect me. He appeals to righteous, strength, determination, confidence
I feel like I should do something to help, even though the speech was given 78 years ago, and that time has passed. I think other people feel like that too.
The purpose is to teach, and persuade. informative, persuasive. It is important.
The purpose of the message is honorable because Roosevelt was telling the audience not to worry because he had given orders out to the Congress. Yes, it shows integrity because Roosevelt wanted to save his people from the Japanese.
The text is about Japan bombing Pearl Harbor because Roosevelt said, “…the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.”
The subject is ethical because Roosevelt was telling the Congress how to approach the matter by declaring war.
no music was used, no specific types of camera angles,
rhetorical devices
- asyndeton: “Mr. Vice President, Mr. Speaker, Members of the Senate, and of the House of Representatives…”
- consonance: “…it contained no threat or hint…”
- anaphora: “Japanese forces attacked… Japanese forces attacked… Japanese attacked… Japanese attacked…”
- anaphora: “the Congress… I ask that the Congress…”
Roosevelt was acknowledging some of the important people, informing us how many different places Japan attacked, and telling the Congress how to approach the matter.
Negative because Roosevelt stated, “Japanese forces attacked…”
“I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost.”
“There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger”
war, danger, deliberately attacked, forces attacked, regret, grave danger. overall tone is negative, I feel uncomfortable.
No biases or fallacies
It had calmed people’s fears and people recognized him as a great speaker over the next 78 years.
33 minutes after the speech, the congress declared war.
81% of American homes listened in to the radio broadcast, more than any other radio broadcast ever in US history. Cited from Brown, Robert J. (1998). Manipulating the ether : the power of broadcast radio in thirties America. Jefferson, NC [u.a.]: McFarland. ISBN 9780786403974.
Franklin D. Roosevelt’s speech is still having impact today as people continue to read, watch, and listen to his speech and recognize him as a great speaker.
His speech had impact on George W Bush’s 9/11 speech.
